The Nursing Assistant I course is an extensive state-approved program that includes instruction in both classroom theory and supervised clinical experience.

Nurse Aide I training includes basic nursing skills required to provide safe, competent personal care for individuals with an emphasis on the following:

  • Person-centered care
  • Aging process
  • Communication
  • Safety/emergencies
  • Infection prevention
  • Legal and ethical issues
  • Measurements
  • Elimination
  • Nutrition
  • Basic restorative care and rehabilitation
  • Dementia
  • Mental health
  • End-of-life care

Upon successful completion of this program, students are eligible to take the NC Division of Health Service Regulation Nurse Aide Registry Exam.

Course Details

Davidson Campus Hybrid Setting: Online assignments are posted weekly. Students will also meet at the Davidson campus for testing and all labs. Computer proficiency required – accelerated class.

Students must be 17 years of age when class begins.

Proof that the READING REQUIREMENT has been met by providing one of the following:

  1. An official or unofficial high school transcript if a student graduated within the last 5 years and has an unweighted GPA of 2.6 or higher.
  2. SAT score report indicating a 480 or higher in Evidence-Based Reading and Writing.
  3. ACT score report of 22 or higher in Reading or 18 or more in English.
  4. Score at least 10.0 on the CASAS reading placement test.
  5. An official or unofficial transcript indicating completion of a college-level English course.

Send required immunizations to nainfo@davidsondavie.edu

  1. Immunizations are required BEFORE students are cleared to register for class.
  2. Required immunizations must be submitted to nainfo@davidsondavie.edubefore receiving clearance to enroll.  
  3. Once complete, you will receive enrollment details along with Complio directions to proceed with the drug screen, background check, upload proof of vaccinations.
  4. Ensure you have the required photo ID and social security card.
  • Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) – proof of two vaccines or titers (blood work) proving immunity.
  • Varicella (Chickenpox) – proof of two vaccines or titers (blood work) proving immunity.
  • Hepatitis B – proof of three vaccines or titers (blood work) proving immunity.
  • QuantiFERON GOLD (IGRA)- blood work proving absence of disease.
    • Your IGRA must be within the past 8 months, prior to the program start date.
    • If you test positive for tuberculin exposure, you must submit a negative chest x-ray within the last 5 years.
    • Note, we DO NOT ACCEPT Tuberculin Skin Tests (TST/PPD).
  • Tetanus (Td/Tdap) – must be updated every 10 years.
  • Influenza (Flu) – must be current for Fall and Spring courses.

  • CLASS AND CLINICAL ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY.
  • Labs, clinical times, and locations may vary from your class schedule.
  • You will need to have a flexible schedule as schedules are subject to change.
  • CPR certification is included in the class and required to be taken by all students, even if they hold a current CPR certification.
  • Compromises cannot be made for students who are unable to meet on the prescribed dates and times of the course.
  • You may be dismissed for attendance violations from class and clinical.

Background checks are conducted through COMPLIO and include social security trace, nationwide criminal, OIG, and sex offender search, as well as statewide criminal search.

  • Pending convictions or convictions of certain crimes under the law may prevent a student from obtaining clinical clearance and/or employment, e.g. drug related, assault/abuse, larceny, fraud.

A 12-panel urine drug screen must be obtained from an approved lab with COMPLIO.

We do not accept outside background checks or drug screens, including Complio accounts from previous college programs.

The student will not be entitled to a refund beyond the census date for any reason.

Safety is key and all precautions must be taken to prevent the transmission of infectious diseases or injury. The physical demands include:

  • Walking/standing for 4-6 hours
  • Bending, pushing, pulling, or lifting up to 25 lbs.
  • Assisting residents safely from bed to wheelchair, moving in bed and walking.
  • Assisting with mechanical lifts

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by the student to successfully perform the essential functions of this course.

  • Testing Fee $140.00 – fee paid to Credentia state-approved testing agency
  • Students register independently after meeting all course requirements.

Disclosure: As a student enrolled in a healthcare training program with Davidson-Davie Community College, you understand that you must complete a clinical field experience with an outside agency as arranged by the college. You further understand, your assigned agency or agencies may have requirements that may differ from those of the college, and that you must meet these requirements to participate in the clinical field experience. Requirements may include but are not limited to criminal background checks, use of specific personal protective equipment (PPE), and specific vaccinations, including those specifically targeted at COVID-19 and/or Influenza (Flu). Failure to meet these clinical stipulations will prevent you from successfully completing program requirements and will result in you being withdrawn from the program. Davidson-Davie Community College will provide direction on the specific requirements for the agencies that are current at the time of enrollment, but you understand that these may change before you reach the clinical experience. In that event, Davidson Davie Community College will provide direction on meeting the requirements and suggest opportunities, if any, to meet any updated requirements. The student will not be entitled to a refund beyond the census date.
