Pregnancy and Parenting Students
Pregnant students
Expecting students are protected under Title IX. Students may request accommodations such as larger desks, the ability to have water in the classroom, or additional breaks. Pregnant students given medical restrictions such as bed rest will be accommodated to the fullest extent practicable. At times, a student’s medical situation may require an incomplete in a course, etc. The Deputy Title IX Coordinator can assist with such arrangements.
Parenting students
Davidson-Davie will provide reasonable accommodations to parenting students who request assistance. Extensions may be granted for medical necessity or extraordinary caretaking/parenting responsibilities.
Students recently pregnant
Typically, students who have a vaginal birth are allowed a six-week maternity leave and Cesarean deliveries are granted eight-week maternity leave. Students may be granted leave as long as medically necessary. Students may also return to school as soon as they wish and are encouraged to work with their medical professionals to determine that timing.
Pregnancy loss, miscarriage and abortion
Students who miscarry, suffer pregnancy loss or false pregnancy, and those who have an abortion are all protected under Title IX. The Title IX Coordinator can assist in making academic and other arrangements in these situations.
Adoption and fostering
Students who adopt or foster children are entitled to the same rights and benefits as birth parents.
Campus Support
24/7 Medical and Mental Telehealth for Students
Davidson-Davie Community College is excited to offer TimelyCare – a new telehealth program for students. The service will provide access to 24/7 medical and mental virtual health care from anywhere in the United States, with no cost to visit! Whether you’re under the weather, anxious or overwhelmed, you will be able to talk to a licensed provider from your smartphone or any web-enabled device. Licensed providers are available to offer medical and mental health support via phone or secure video visits.
Students can go to timelycare.com/davidsondavie to register with their name and school email address. Students can then have visits from any web-enabled device – smartphone, laptop, or desktop.
Family & Lactation Room
The Family and Lactation Room is a place where families and nursing parents can bring their children to nurse/feed. Lactation Rooms are located on the Davidson Campus in the Smith building Rm 106 and on the Davie campus by request.
Childcare
Finding childcare services for your child is and can be a very stressful experience. The Child Development Center enrolls children from infancy through five years of age. The Child Development Center earned a 5-star rating in August 2000, the highest rating awarded by N.C. Division of Child Development, which regulates licensed childcare facilities in the state. Non-Academic Resources
Single Stop is located in the Grady Edward Love Building, Suite 206. Single Stop at Davidson-Davie Community College is an opportunity for students to get connected to resources that will help keep them in school. The idea is to have a place where students can go to get screened for multiple government benefits and local community resources, receive assistance in accessing those benefits, and follow up to make sure they’re successful in applying and receiving the benefits. Benefits and services include things like Food Stamps, child care assistance, Medicaid, free tax preparation, financial counseling, and legal referrals.
