DCCC is One of 18 College Campuses Partnering with Food Lion Feeds & NC Campus Compact to Address Food Insecurity in North Carolina

November 15, 2018 – North Carolina Campus Compact announced this week they have joined forces with Food Lion Feeds to launch a “Collegiate Challenge” mobilizing colleges & universities to address hunger in their local community. Davidson County Community College is one among a group of 18 geographically diverse schools — including 4-year colleges and universities and 2-year community colleges – who will be hosting events to raise awareness about hunger in partnership with their local food bank, on-campus pantries and local Food Lion stores. All participating schools are members of North Carolina Campus Compact.  Winning schools can receive $10,000 for the most engagement and creativity on campus, and a second award of $10,000 will be awarded for the campus that collects the most food – adjusted for school size – in a food drive.  The prize funds will support hunger-related initiatives such as campus-based food pantries, campus or community gardens, food recovery efforts modeled on the Campus Kitchen Project or the Food Recovery Network, and fresh produce distribution. The Collegiate Challenge runs from September – December.

“We are excited to partner with NC Campus Compact and these 18 campuses that are already doing so much around food insecurity,” said Pat Taft, Community Relations Manager for Food Lion.  “It is a natural fit for us because we are passionate about feeding our neighbors who shop with us and those who may have the difficult task of choosing between rent and gas and groceries.  We want to encourage the great work these students are already doing and by supporting their efforts we can broaden the reach of our hunger relief efforts in the towns and cities we serve.”

Davidson County Community College has selected Tyler Cranford and Lee Anna Fergerson as MVP Ambassadors to lead the campaign.  Tyler will complete his Associate in Science Degree in December 2018 and Lee Anna will complete her Associate in Arts Degree in May 2019.

Both were selected because of their unwavering belief that no student should go hungry while pursuing his or her education. The faculty/staff mentor is Lynne Watts, Director of Student Life.

Those wanting to get involved are encouraged to join the college for its “Fill the Stands with Food Lion Cans” event on Wednesday, November 28 when the Storm Men’s Basketball plays Wake Tech at 7 p.m. in the Brinkley gym, located on the Davidson Campus.

Through Food Lion Feeds, the company has made a commitment to provide 500 million meals to individuals and families in need by the end of 2020. Since the launch of Food Lion Feeds in 2014, the grocer has donated more than 400 million meals through in-store campaigns, in-store food rescue programs and associate volunteerism.
