DCCC Hosts Welcoming Week

Davidson County Community College will celebrate Welcoming Week by hosting a series of cultural events to recognize immigrant contributions to the United States. 

On Wednesday, September 20, students and the community are invited at 11 a.m. to attend “Tres Vidas,” a musical production on the lives of three legendary Latin American Women: Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, Salvadoran peasant activist Rufina Amaya and Argentinean poet Alfonsina Storni. Then at noon, DCCC President Mary Rittling will read a proclamation in the Davidson Courtyard followed by a performance from local Cambodian Dancers.

Throughout the week, the campus dining menu will include cultural cuisine from around the globe. On Monday, September 18, those dining will be able to listen to the musical talents of DCCC graduate Fredd Reyes.

“Our college and community’s participation in Welcoming Week shows that in both Davidson and Davie Counties, Americans of all backgrounds are coming together to create stronger, more prosperous communities,” Director of International Education Suzanne LaVenture said. “We are proud to be a part of Welcoming Week, which is demonstrating that in places large and small, rural and urban, people of all backgrounds are coming together to create stronger communities. It is a time to celebrate the values that unite us as neighbors, parents, and colleagues, and to make our towns more welcoming to newcomers and to everyone who calls our community home.”
