Meet the Volleyball Coaches

Emma Hannaford Carter was named the Head Women’s Volleyball Coach at Davidson-Davie Community College in April 2024. She begins her first season at Davidson-Davie after coaching at Karns High School and Club Unite in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Carter played for Johnson University from 2020-2022 for Coach Robin Vannoy before graduating a year early. She was a three-year starter as a middle blocker, earning 2-time All Mideast Region Honors and being named an NAIA Scholar-Athlete. During the 2021 season, she helped lead the Royals to the Mideast NCCAA-ll Regional Championship. The Royals finished as the national tournament runner-up, the best finish in Johnson University volleyball history. In 2022, Johnson University clinched their first AAC Tournament berth after moving to the NAIA.

Carter is from Jackson, Tennessee, where she graduated from Trinity Christian Academy in 2020. During her high school career, she played volleyball for Kelly Toomey Elliott and Christa Karns. She was a 4-year player, earning All-Conference honors and leading the team in multiple statistical categories. She was part of two conference championships, two region titles, and one trip to the state tournament. Carter also played basketball and was a member of the 2020 Division ll-A state championship team.

In 2023, Carter graduated from Johnson with a degree in Family Studies. She is married to William Carter, who is a graduate student at Wake Forest University.

Katelyn Devane

Assistant Coach

Katelyn DeVane was appointed Assistant Women’s Volleyball Coach at Davidson-Davie Community College in August 2024.
Prior to this role, DeVane served as the Activities Director at Providence Baptist Church, where she managed youth and adult sports leagues, including basketball, softball, and soccer. She also gained valuable experience as a Graduate Assistant in the Athletic Communications Department at Wingate University for two years.

A native of Lillington, North Carolina, DeVane graduated at the top of her class from Cape Fear Christian Academy in 2013. There, she was a standout athlete under the guidance of Danielle Faircloth (Struke) and Scotty Scarborough. DeVane earned four varsity letters in volleyball and served as team captain for two years. She was also a four-year letter winner in basketball and softball and a three-time NCISAA softball state champion.

DeVane holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Community & Commercial Recreation from Wingate University, graduating in May 2017, and a Master of Arts in Sport Management, which she earned in July 2020 from the same institution.
