August 19, 2023 – The Davidson-Davie Community College volleyball team certainly started its season on a strong note with a pair of three-game sweeps in a tri-match Saturday at Brinkley Gym
The Storm topped rival Sandhills Community College 27-25, 25-13, 25-19 in an intense opener and followed that up with a 25-17, 25-20, 25-14 victory over USC-Sumter. Davidson-Davie is coming off a program-best 21 wins in the 2022 season and fifth-year head coach Steve Elliott is starting to see the results of recruiting and culture building.
Davidson-Davie put its rally caps on in the third game after trailing throughout. The Storm pulled even at 19-19 and then proceeded to score the next six points to complete the sweep.
“We have a rivalry with Sandhills that dates back to when we were both D3,” said Elliott, referring to the fact both programs are now Division 2 in the junior college ranks. “”It always gets emotional and intense. And Sandhills is pretty good.”
Arnett tallied 14 assists and seven digs while Carleigh Whitson had 17 digs. Greene contributed 12 kills and Powell had 10 kills and 11 digs.
Davidson-Davie returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Patrick & Henry Community College in Martinsville, Va. for a 6 p.m. match.
The Storm will host another tri-match on Saturday against Caldwell Tech and Pitt Community College. Davidson-Davie will play at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
