STORM Volleyball Makes QuickWork of Wake Tech

September 19, 2023 – Davidson-Davie Community College Volleyball coach Steve Elliott felt like something was a bit off with his team during its matchup with Wake Tech on Monday night at Brinkley Gym. Good thing the scoreboard didn’t validate those feelings.

The Storm, who were still stinging some from two consecutive losses last week, breezed past the Eagles 25-11, 25-17, 25-14. Davidson-Davie used its power at the net to overwhelm Wake Tech and added a steller serving performance to improve to 12-3 on the season. “You could tell we were still kind of tired, maybe from the long trip we made on Saturday,” said Elliott, referring to his club’s outing to Southwest Virginia Community College, which is nearly three hours away. “We had the two disappointing losses last week (against Sandhills and Cleveland Community College). We bounced back and won two at Southwest Virginia on Saturday but we were without our normal intensity tonight. I thought we played good, but something was missing.”

Following two straight kills from Emma Rogers and Kennedy Powell to open the match, the Storm bolted to a sizeable 10-2 lead in the first game. Gabrielle Greene added a kill during the spurt and Carleigh Whitson came through with three consecutive aces. The second game featured a rally by the home team as it trailed 6-3 early. Davidson-Davie tallied nine of the next 11 points and seized command with a 12-8 lead.

The Storm had five different players (Powell, Greene, Rogers, Camilla Summers and Marissa McCann) account for kills during the second game.

Greene put down five of her nine kills in the third game as the Storm jumped out early and finished off the sweep. Greene had a little extra motivation for this one after having transferred from Wake Tech. “I really wanted to beat them bad but I want to beat everyone bad,” said Greene, the 5-foot-11 sophomore. “But it really wasn’t that big of a thing for me. There’s only one girl still playing for them that played there last year and it’s a new head coach. When we’ve lost this season, it’s because we’ve lost trust in each other. We’re not focused on what’s best for the team.”

Powell led the way with 12 kills while Whitset had four serving aces and 10 digs. Hannah Arnett was steady as usual with 15 assists, making it easy on the Storm’s bevy of hitters. “We’re trying to run our 6-2 alignment a lot now and it seems like everyone is getting involved,” said Elliott. “We’ve got two big Region 10 matches on Saturday. We can do it, we can win them both. But it’s going to be a tough task.”

The Storm travel to Wilmington to take on Cape Fear Community College, which only has one loss and a solid Fayetteville Tech team.

“Tonight was really big as to how we’re going to play this weekend,” Greene said. “We need to play our best.”
