Storm Guard to Continue College Basketball Career

DCCC’s Tre Williams Signs with Claflin University

THOMASVILLE, N.C. … Davidson County Community College Storm basketball player Tre Williams has accepted a full basketball scholarship from Claflin University in Orangeburg, S.C. The standout guard from Salisbury signed a scholarship agreement to play for the Panthers during a ceremony Monday afternoon in Brinkley Gym.

Head Coach Matt Ridge calls Williams the “backbone” of the program in his two years wearing a Storm uniform and a team leader who makes his teammates better.

“Not only does Tre hold himself to a high standard of excellence but he demands the same from his teammates. He leads by example and verbally,” Ridge said. “He also leads us in rebounding at 5 feet, 11 inches and has helped us to win multiple championships the last two years. Claflin University is getting a big-time basketball player and an even better person.”

As a sophomore, Williams is averaging 15.4 points, 7.1 rebounds and 5.4 assists per game in leading the Storm to a regular season co-championship in the National Junior College Athletic Association’s Region X. He was named to the First Team All-Region (Tarheel Conference), runner-up for Region X Player of the Year and was one of only two players in the region to be selected as an All-American nominee. As a freshman, he was named to the All-Tarheel Conference and Region X Freshman Second Team. DCCC’s overall record during the two years Williams has played for the Storm is 54-6.

Williams, the son of Bryan and Missy Williams of Salisbury, is a graduate of Jesse C. Carson High School. During his high school career, he was named to All-County (Rowan), All-Conference and All-District teams.

“DCCC gave me the opportunity that many other colleges didn’t give me, and that was to continue my career in playing basketball while giving me an education. I couldn’t do this without DCCC,” Williams said. “I’m blessed and honored to receive this scholarship.”

Clafin University athletic teams compete in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC). The SIAC is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), Division II.
