Chapter 30 – The Montgomery G.I. Bill – Active Duty

The MGIB-AD program provides up to 36 months of education benefits. This benefit may be used for degree and certificate programs, flight training, apprenticeship/on-the-job training and correspondence courses. Remedial, deficiency and refresher courses may be approved under certain circumstances. Generally, benefits are payable for 10 years following your release from active duty. This program is also commonly known as Chapter 30.

Chapter 31 – Vocational Readiness and Employment (VR&E)

If you are a Veteran who has a service-connected disability that limits your ability to work or prevents you from working, you may be eligible for Chapter 31 (Vocational Rehabilitation) benefits. To submit an application, please contact your local VAVR Office. You may need to set up an appointment to discuss your educational plans, test your aptitude, interests and abilities as well as review the nature of your disability and how it affects your ability to gain employment. A decision of your entitlement to the benefit will be rendered after the counseling appointment. Once the application is filed, you will need to contact the School Certifying Official at Davidson-Davie to assist you in getting started.

Chapter 33 – Post 9/11 GI Bill®

The Post-9/11 GI Bill® is for individuals with at least 90 days of aggregate service on or after September 11, 2001, or individuals discharged with a service-connected disability after 30 days. You must have received an honorable discharge to be eligible for the Post-9/11 GI Bill®. You may transfer part or all of your entitlement to a dependent child or spouse (https://www.va.gov/education/transfer-post-9-11-gi-bill-benefits/).

This program will pay eligible individuals:

  • Tuition & fees directly to the school (not to exceed the maximum in-state tuition & fees at a public Institution of Higher Learning)
  • A monthly housing allowance based on the Basic Allowance for Housing for an E-5 with dependents at the location of the school
  • An annual books & supplies stipend of $1,000 paid proportionately based on enrollment
  • For training beginning on or after August 1, 2018, the Monthly Housing Allowance (MHA) payment amounts are based on the Department of Defense’s Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) rates for an “E-5 with dependents” for the zip code of the campus or training location where student has a majority of classes

Chapter 35 – Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance Program (DEA)

Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance provides education and training opportunities to eligible dependents of certain veterans. The program offers up to 45 months of education benefits. These benefits may be used for degree and certificate programs, apprenticeships, and on-the-job training. If you are a spouse, you may take a correspondence course. Remedial, deficiency and refresher courses may be approved under certain circumstances.

To qualify, you must be the child or spouse of:

  • A veteran who died or is permanently and totally disabled as the result of a service-connected disability; the disability must arise out of active service in the Armed Forces.
  • A veteran who died from any cause while such permanent and total service-connected disability was in existence
  • A service member missing in action or captured in line of duty by a hostile force
  • A service member forcibly detained or interned in line of duty by a foreign government or power
  • A service member who is hospitalized or receiving outpatient treatment for a service-connected permanent and total disability and is likely to be discharged for that disability.

Chapter 1606 – Montgomery GI Bill® Select Reserve (MGIB-SR)

The MGIB-SR program may be available to you if you are a member of the Selected Reserve. The Selected Reserve includes the Army Reserve, Navy Reserve, Air Force Reserve, Marine Corps Reserve and Coast Guard Reserve, and the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard.
