DCCC’s Learning Commons wins 2015 National College Learning Center Association Frank L. Christ Outstanding Learning Center Awar

Learning Commons Director Elizabeth Kremer announces prestigious award in two-year college category

Thomasville, NC. October 1, 2015 Elizabeth Kremer, Director of the DCCC Learning Commons is pleased to announce that the college’s Learning Commons has received the prestigious 2015 National College Learning Center Association Frank L. Christ Outstanding Learning Center Award in the two-year college category.

This extremely competitive award is given to schools in order to give national recognition to the work done by learning centers and to foster future growth and development. Only two awards are given each year, one to a two-year college and one to a four-year college.

The criteria for the awards are based on best practices established by Frank L. Christ (1972—1990), a well-known advocate of learning assistance, author of numerous scholarly articles, monographs and books. Mr. Christ instituted a set of nine criteria upon which the awards are based. In order to be granted the Christ Award, an institution must met or exceed certain benchmarks, including goals and objectives, clientele served, programs, technology, program evaluation and staff training. The DCCC Learning Commons has exceeded all nine standards and will receive their award at the National College Learning Center Association Annual National Conference in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on October 6, 2015.

Kremer states, “We are truly excited about receiving the award and thank the National College Learning Center Association. It is very humbling to know students are seen annually and are supported for ongoing success through the DCCC Learning Commons. This prestigious recognition is further validation of the vital work we are performing and the staff’s commitment to student success.”

The DCCC Learning Commons on the Davidson campus, which opened in August 2011, is 18,628 square feet and serves both the Davidson and Davie campuses with state-of-the-art physical facilities, including 4 study rooms, 2 conference rooms, a reading lounge, testing center for the college, and video conferencing classroom.

The DCCC Learning Commons offers a depth and breadth of support for students in many ways. The Coaching Centers provides support for students in math, computer technology, reading and writing, biology, chemistry, physics, nursing, Emergency Medical Sciences, Spanish and study skills. In addition, the Learning Commons provides academic support workshops and online tutoring 24 /7 in a large variety of subjects. Staffed with 8 full-time employees, 12 parttime employees, 11 student workers and 4 full-time faculty volunteers, the Learning Commons has a group of dedicated employees that help students in every way possible.
