March 25, 2025 – Legendary basketball coach Tubby Smith will usher in four new inductees into Davidson-Davie Community College’s Athletics Hall of Fame during an induction ceremony, scheduled for April 26 at 6 p.m. in the Mary E. Rittling Conference Center. Tickets for the event are on sale now, at davidsondaviefoundation.org/hof/.
Smith, who will offer remarks during the event, guided the University of Kentucky to the 1998 NCAA title, and also coached at the University of Minnesota, Texas Tech, the University of Memphis and High Point University – where he also played as a student. Additionally, he served as an assistant coach for the Olympic Gold Medal basketball team in 2000; he retired from coaching at HPU in 2022.
This year’s event will honor Deon Boyce, Jamarius Hairston, Katie Watkins Shelton and Todd Hunt.
“We are proud to have the opportunity to honor these four individuals by inducting them into the STORM Athletics Hall of Fame,” said Matt Ridge, athletics director and head men’s basketball coach at the college. “We are recognizing three talented athletes, as well as a valued member of our community who has provided tremendous support to our athletics program.”
Deon Boyce, a native of Jacksonville, N.C., played basketball at Davidson-Davie during the 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 seasons, where he was strong on the court – amassing accolades, including being named to the First Team All-Freshman (2010-2011), First Team All-Region (2010-2011), Region 10 Player of the Year (2011-2012), Second Team All-American (2011-2012) and additionally recovered 960 rebounds during his time at the college. He went on to play professionally in Nicaragua in 2015 and Bolivia in 2016.
Jamarius Hairston, a native of Salisbury, N.C., played for the STORM during the 2019-2020 season, scoring 645 at the college, averaging 20 points per game and a 40 percent average from the three-point range. He earned much recognition during his time at Davidson-Davie – Hairston was named Region 10 Player of the Year (2019-2020), First Team All-American (2019-2020), First Team All-Region (2019-2020). The team’s final ranking during his season was third in the nation, with an overall record of 31-1. Hairston went on to play at Lees-McRae College and East Tennessee State.
Katie Watkins Shelton, a native of Trinity, N.C., played volleyball at Davidson-Davie during the 2009 and 2010 seasons. During her time at the college, she had 532 kills and was named Region 10 Player of the Year (2009), Honorable Mention All-American (2009) and First Team All-Region (2009 and 2010). Watkins help to lead the volleyball team to its first National Tournament in 2009.
Todd Hunt, of Lexington, N.C. and owner of Jerry Hunt Supercenter, has been a major benefactor and friend to STORM Athletics for years. While he didn’t attend Davidson-Davie, his support to athletics and education remains steadfast, previously noting the importance of working together as a community. Hunt’s support is visible outside the entrance to the Brinkley Gym with Jerry Hunt Supercenter signage.
