Davidson-Davie Features Local Artists in Annual Spring Art Show, ‘Wings of Reflection’

“We are so fortunate to have such gifted artists in our community,” says Kristin Briggs, executive director of the Davidson-Davie Foundation. “The works on display not only portray great detail, but also show the time and care they devote to their craft.”

The artists featured in the show include:

Dennis Pollard, of Greensboro, who is exhibiting nature photography and appreciates the constant change in technology related to photography both in taking, editing and printing. He enjoys traditional and computer enhanced work. Pollard often takes between 1,000 to 3,000 images when he goes out to shoot photos and spends days sorting through his work.

Sunsuk Lee, of Lewisville, is exhibiting pottery. Her work is expressive and organic in nature, and also incorporates found objects that bring new life and inspiration to her pieces. Lee’s work offers surprises and cascading dimensions.

Marion Adams, of Winston-Salem, is exhibiting colored pencil art. Adams, whose work has been featured in Ann Kullberg’s “Colored Pencil: Secrets of Success,” has a 30-year career in teaching art, math and science in middle and high school, and also holds a master’s degree in art education. She is a member of Artworks Gallery in Winston-Salem.

Nancy V. Seay, of Greensboro, is exhibiting photography and watercolor media. Seay documents the beauty of nature and includes landscapes, botanicals, insects and more. She’s a member of the Watercolor Society of North Carolina and the South Carolina Watermedia Society. 

Kathy Johnson, of Lexington, is exhibiting photography using the cyanotype method – a process that produces a cyan blue print. Johnson also uses a new technique called wet cyanotype that utilizes leaves and flowers placed on fabric or rice paper, which is then coated with chemicals and spritzed with water or water and baking soda. The prints are covered in glass and set in the sun to process – which she says is like magic as light and water alter the images. Johnson, a graduate of Salem College with a degree in studio art, is also a quilter and printmaker.

Valerie G. Whitfield, of Greensboro, is exhibiting mixed media collages and monotypes. Whitfield’s natural style is Fauvism and abstract expressionism, and she enjoys using pastels, watercolor, pen and ink, acrylic and found materials. Whitfield, a self-taught artist who previously worked in publications, marketing and operations management, began devoting more time to art in 2018 by enrolling in classes though the Sawtooth School of Art and Greensboro Art Council. She currently has a space in Winston-Salem where she displays and sells her art.

“We hope the community visits the college to help us celebrate our local talent,” Briggs adds. “This is truly an event that helps support our vision by inspiring imagination and strengthening our community.”

“Wings of Reflection” will take place in the first and second floors of the B.E. Mendenhall Building on the Davidson Campus, located at 297 DCC Road in Thomasville. The exhibit will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. All pieces in the show are available for purchase.
