This study abroad experience will take you to Japan, a country of beautiful contrasts that harmoniously blends ancient traditions with modern wonders. You’ll begin in Tokyo, where you will visit exciting pop-culture destinations like the Akihabara district and Ghibli Museum*, before riding the iconic bullet train to the ancient city of Kyoto, where you will visit historical temples and participate in a traditional silk weaving demonstration. You’ll then visit a piece of somber, yet unforgettable WWII history in the city of Hiroshima, where you will tour the Peace Memorial Museum and hear from a survivor of the bombing. Whatever your cup of tea, this trip has something for you!
*Ghibli Museum visit based on ticket availability with Edo Tokyo Museum as an alternate activity.

Associated Course
All participants must take HUM 120 for credit or the concurrent continuing education course. The class will meet on Thursday evenings from 6-7:15 p.m. during the first eight weeks of the spring semester of 2023. The class will also meet on the Thursday following the trip for a time of reflection. The cost of the continuing education class will be $49.

Payment Plan
Payments must be paid to our Business Office & can be made in person Mon. to Fri. 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM (except holidays). They are located on the 2nd floor of the Brooks Student Center on the Davidson Campus, or in the Administration building on the Davie Campus. After completing your Application Form, you will be contacted by Suzanne LaVenture & one of the trip leaders & will be directed to pay a $200 non-refundable study abroad fee to the Davidson-Davie Community College business office to secure your spot. Keep in mind that space is limited and once the trip capacity is reached, applications will be closed, so pay your deposit as soon as possible to reserve your seat! SCHOLARSHIP INFO
Davidson-Davie Scholarships: All study abroad participants who will still be a student at Davidson-Davie Community College during the 2023 spring semester & have completed at least 12 credit hours at Davidson-Davie will have the option of applying for partial scholarships. The application is now open & the deadline to apply is Sun. Sept. 11, 2022 by midnight. More information, including the DDCC Study Abroad Scholarship Application.
Gilman Scholarship: If you receive a Pell grant, you are eligible for the Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship which may cover up to the entire cost of the study abroad program. Keep an eye on the Gilman Scholarship info page (linked below) for deadlines. The application opens mid-August 2022 & the deadline is Thurs. Oct. 6, 2022.
