2020 Lexington Farmers Market poster features DCCC student design

March 10, 2020 – As the winds of winter slow into spring, the Lexington Farmers Market prepares for a summer season of fresh produce, artisanal creations and connected community. In an effort to bring together these entities and more, the market has tasked students of Davidson County Community College with how to best share their message with the community.

The Farmers Market board and community members gathered to hear students present their poster designs on the Davidson campus of DCCC at the beginning of March.

“At its heart, the Lexington Farmers Market is a community collaboration that brings local farmers, food producers and artisans together with people who want fresh, local food,” Kivi Leroux Miller, president of the board of directors for the Lexington Farmers Market, said. “It makes perfect sense to extend that collaboration further to include DCCC. The students challenge our assumptions about the farmers market and help us clarify our thinking.  In return, the students get the real-world experience of working with clients.”

Seven students from DCCC’s digital media production program worked with board members throughout the project. The board chose student John Pettit’s design to represent this year’s season.

“I am truly honored,” Pettit said. “In a lot of ways, this validates my decision to return to school and earn my degree. I hope my design will help grow a greater sense of community in Lexington. Bringing customers, farmers and vendors together is mutually beneficial for everyone.”

In his presentation, Pettit remarked on returning to school later in life and joining the digital media production program. He recounted after a workplace injury that limited his ability to perform his duties successfully, he looked to DCCC for a new career path.

“The goal has always been to earn this degree and find my dream job,” Pettit said.

The posters of digital media production students Elijah Toney, Sara Winsmith, Caleb Kluttz, Jeffrey Fletcher, Camryn Cottrell and Katlyn Brooks will also be on display with Pettit’s design at the farmers market.

This is the third year the farmers market’s board members tasked the students in the college’s digital media production program with designing their season’s poster.

“Each year that we do this project, I am always surprised by the novelty of ideas from the students,” digital media production instructor Jeffrey Pubantz said. “This is a real-world opportunity for students. Navigating the client-designer relationship is an invaluable experience to have early on in their careers. Students learn how to adapt their personal design styles with the needs of a client, and in this case have their designs shared for the benefit of the local community.”

All posters created in this year’s digital media production program will be on display at Lexington Farmers Market at the Depot on 129 South Railroad Street in Lexington from their opening day on May 2 to mid-October.
